By Jonathan Filibus

Lawmakers in the Adamawa State House of Assembly have observed with dismay the indiscriminate dumping of refuse and other particles in the newly constructed drainages in Jambutu and Wauro Jabbe and some parts of the state capital.

The legislators however, detailed the house standing committee on environment of the house to liaise with the ministry of environment and other relevant authorities to check the trend.

This was part of the resolution of the lawmakers adopted at the resumed plenary session during the week as sponsored under matter of urgent public importance by the member representing Hong constituency Hon. Hassan Barguma.

Earlier, Hon. Barguma drew the attention of the hallowed chamber on the nonchalant attitude of the public in Jambutu and Wauro Jabbe and some parts of the state capital as regards the indiscriminate dumping of refuse in the newly constructed drainages in the affected areas.

He said it was unfortunate that even as the government work most especially in the area of road construction, people have been making its work look bad, adding that the menace of littering the drainages has become a source of concern to him and other stakeholders in the state.

The legislator told his colleagues that when solid wastes are dumped into gutters, ditches or sewers, it can cause blockages to the city’s drainage and sewage system, urging the house of assembly to take it as responsibility and curtail the indiscriminate dumping of wastes on the roads and drainage.

According to him, indiscriminate dumping of refuse especially in drainage had caused flooding not only in some parts of the state but the country in general, praying the house of assembly to mandate its committee on environment and other relevant authorities to work towards preventing such occurrences by doing the needful.
Speaking on the motion, Hon. Emmanuel Tsandu (Madagali constituency) stated that littering and illegal dumping of domestic wastes in all of its forms should be avoided in order to protect the population and the environment from very form of degradation and the people from environmental or health hazards.

While advising residents of the state capital against indiscriminate dumping of refuse, considering its health implication on human lives and to avoid flooding, Hon. Tsamdu, explained that when solid wastes are improperly disposed of, they present all kinds of hazards.

After contributions from the lawmakers, the speaker Hon. Kabiru Mijinyawa, who presided over the plenary session, directed the committee to as a matter of urgent interest liaise with the relevant authorities and curtail the trend.
