President Buhari May Have Been Oblivious Of People's Wahala
Much as I adore President Buhari and his leadership's crack down on corruption, I really am flabbergasted and utterly nonplussed when it comes to his Govt's policy on banning importation of rice and now used cars through land borders. Under normal circumstances, in a conscious economy, these policies ordinarily yield a lot of gains to both Govt and people. But since Nigeria's economy has been fumbling in the doldrums of recession unconsciously, such policies would rather breed more and more poverty, hunger and ultimately public discontent and outcry.
When in the first half of this year, 2016, PMB's govt banned importation of rice and other food items through land borders majority of Nigerians have been hardly able to eat a meal a day because of arbitrary soaring and skyrocketting of prices of food items and other essential commodities, both locally produced and imported ones. Since then, there have been increasing public discontent with this particular policy as well as plunging of President Buhari's popularity indices consequently.
Now, as if that's not yet enough, PMB's Govt banned the importation of used cars through land borders just a couple of days ago. I think this could create a scenario similar to the one created following the banning of rice importation via land borders.
This, I think, could further make prices of both used and new vehicles rise up to the sky..., thus making it imponderably difficult for people like me and you to purchase a car, for instance.
Furthermore, this banning could prompt commercial drivers to raise transportation and commuter fares far, far beyond the affordability of ordinary people.
These are not mere speculations. The Govt is supposed to take clues from the aftermaths of the banning of rice import and avoid the reoccurrence of that scenario. But the Govt is rather adamant on its unpopular policies.
Even though the Govt claims getting fat revenues through seaport imports, but the masses who voted the Govt into power always end up suffering, with little of the accrued revenues that are purportedly generated through the so-called seaport imports impacting on their life! This makes me think PMB may have forgotten the 'black suffering' that affect the masses on daily basis.
I'd like to call the attention of the Govt that if it must carry on with these anti-social policies, then, I'm afraid, it must have to introduce price control measures.
#IStandWithBuhari but please Mr. President don't be carried away by thinking MACRO ECONOMY thus forgetting the ordinary people that suffer the gravitational force of your policies, always think MICRO ECONOMY also so that you may remember that majority of the people are REALLY SUFFERING.
